How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled?

Jesus in Gethsemane, when He was betrayed.

He told Peter to put away the sword and then He said this.

Matthew 26:53-54

53 Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?

54 How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?”

He had already prayed to the Father.

He knew the plan and the Father's will.

Jesus had already asked for this cup to pass from Him.

But He surrendered Himself to the Father's will.

The disciples had slept and missed this.

No doubt they were surprised and shocked that Jesus was being arrested.

They had not understood or believed what He had told them.

Jesus reminds them that this was the plan.

God's plan of salvation, to save everyone who will believe.

And Jesus was going to see this plan through.

He knew He must fulfill the prophecies, the scriptures about Himself.

Sometimes we are like the disciples.

We get complacent and rest on our laurels, or we grow weary and become spiritually sleepy.

We miss the signs, the warnings.

Then we are caught unaware, off guard.

And our reaction is foolish or rash.

We need to stay awake and aware.

Stay ready in prayer and study of God's word.

Don't be caught off guard.
