In Luke 23:34, Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”
A prayer for His enemies.
Even as He died for us and those enemies, Jesus set the example of praying for them.
Luke 23:43, Jesus said to the thief, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
Showing that those who believe in him will be saved.
Even if we begin as an enemy, if we repent and believe, we can be saved.
In John 19:26, Jesus told His mother, Mary, “Woman, behold your son!”
Jesus told John to take care of Mary and Mary to accept John as her son.
Jesus was cutting ties with this earthly life in some ways.
He was moving beyond the idea of an earthly family, to be the ruler of a spiritual family and kingdom.
She would now be a woman to Jesus, and Jesus would be her Savior, as He is for everyone.
Matthew 27:46, Jesus cried out, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
This was in part to call to mind the scripture from Psalm 22:1.
Proving the prophecy was fulfilled.
Psalm 22:1
My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?
Why are You so far from helping Me,
And from the words of My groaning?
This also showed how completely Jesus suffered for us.
Jesus took our sin and died our death on the cross.
He suffered even separation from God the Father, in our place.
Jesus took every punishment we deserve, so we would not.
For our sin, we deserve separation and death, but Jesus suffered that for us.
Jesus made us free from this, the result of our sin.
He paid this debt for us completely, in every way.
To save us for all eternity.
In John 19:28, Jesus said, “I thirst!”
Showing His human condition.
Jesus was God in the flesh, suffering as a human suffers, for us.
Then in John 19:30, Jesus said, “It is finished!”
Jesus had completed the plan.
God's plan to fulfill the old covenant was complete.
Jesus had done all that He needed to do in the flesh.
He did God's will to the end.
Setting another example for us.
Finally, in Luke 23:46, Jesus said, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’
Jesus entrusted His spirit to God, the Father.
Knowing that the Father would raise Him from the dead.
Again, setting the example for us.
When we pass from this life, we can trust the Lord with our spirit.
That He will raise us again at the right time.
