"But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me." - John 15:26
Jesus is speaking to the disciples before He is taken away to die on the cross.
Several things we want to notice here.
First, the Holy Spirit is being referred to as "the Helper".
He aids us, guides us, encourages us, and comforts us in our efforts to be more like Jesus.
To grow spiritually.
The Holy Spirit does this through God's word.
Once baptized, He is always with us, but He will not say anything contrary to God's word.
He is God and will not take away from or add to His word.
He will help us to learn and grow in God's word, changing our hearts and minds.
Another thing to see is the Trinity is in this verse.
Jesus, as God, will send us the Spirit of truth, Who is from the Father.
This is a part of God's plan, and the Father gave Jesus the authority to send us the Spirit.
Notice also, He is the Spirit of truth.
What does that mean?
The Spirit reveals moral and divine truth.
As well as factual, absolute truth, reality.
And He and this truth come from the Father.
Because God is the source of all truth and reality.
He created this reality for us.
Finally, Jesus says the Spirit will testify regarding Himself, Jesus.
He will tell us the truth about Jesus.
He will bear witness and affirm Jesus.
The Spirit gives us evidence of Jesus.
All in the Bible, God's word.
Proving Jesus is God, the Lord, the Messiah, Creator, and King.
Jesus promised them this and delivered on it to them and to us.
Now, when we are baptized, we receive the Holy Spirit.
Then we have the Helper, the Counselor, and Comforter to help us in this life.
He guides us in our study of the Lord and His teachings.
Do not let this great Spirit go to waste in you.
Study the Bible, God's word.
Trust in Him to guide you and aid you in understanding.
And always remember, the Spirit will not add to or take away from God's word.
He will never lessen the divinity of Christ or take away from God's goodness and holiness.
In this way you can test the Spirit of anyone you may listen to, and you can keep a check on yourself as well.
