Do Not Be Enticed

Proverbs 1:10-19

10 My son, if sinners entice you,

Do not consent.

11 If they say, “Come with us,

Let us lie in wait to shed blood;

Let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause;

12 Let us swallow them alive like Sheol,

And whole, like those who go down to the Pit;

13 We shall find all kinds of precious possessions,

We shall fill our houses with spoil;

14 Cast in your lot among us,

Let us all have one purse”—

15 My son, do not walk in the way with them,

Keep your foot from their path;

16 For their feet run to evil,

And they make haste to shed blood.

17 Surely, in vain the net is spread

In the sight of any bird;

18 But they lie in wait for their own blood,

They lurk secretly for their own lives.

19 So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain;

It takes away the life of its owners.

Do not be seduced by the world.

By those who are greedy for earthly gain.

We may not be ambushing people physically.

Not mugging them in the alley or on the street.

Or burglarizing someone's home.

But are we earning money through sinful business?

Are we operating a lewd and wicked business?

We know the world will tell us sex sells.

So, use immoral images or ideas to promote a business.

Even if that enterprise itself is not immoral.

As Christians we cannot walk in the world's ways and Christ's.

We must obey Jesus and be innocent as doves.

Judge ourselves, are we using obscene language or images or ideas to benefit ourselves?

For temporary wealth and pleasure in this short life?

Are we stealing things because we covet them?

Taking from others what they need?

The world encourages us to be dishonest, to drink and eat to excess.

To look out for number one, to take whatever we can get for our own.

In a word, to be indecent in all our behavior.

Especially in the name of money and material goods.

Do not fall for the world and its greed and lusts.

Those lead to our death and destruction.

Jesus gives us the example of a life that is honest, decent, and beneficial to all.

He says we must lose our life to find it.

Do not be charmed by what looks like easy riches.

Lose the worldly life in Christ and find the eternal life that is kept safe for us in God.
